A Little Background...
Dr. Jeff was born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona. The city was a different place then, with cotton fields where there are now strip malls, and orchards everywhere. The north central corridor was where he lived and played. Jeff always loved animals, cats and dogs were always part of the family. He also raised parakeets and had chickens, and even raised a couple 4-H lambs. Fast forward a few years, and he went off to Southern California to college. Jeff returned to Phoenix again, and graduated from ASU. He had a first career in construction, before following his dream of becoming a veterinarian. Jeff attended Colorado State University to receive his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine. There he met his future wife, and after graduation in 1997 they both returned to Arizona. After a couple years of working for his mentor, Dr. Willard Ambrose, in that same north central area, Jeff bought Carmel Animal Hospital from the retiring Dr. A (as Dr. Ambrose was affectionately known). Ten years later, the City of Phoenix made plans for a light rail system, and Carmel Animal Hospital was a casualty. The Hirsch family moved to western Colorado, and a few years later Jeff and his wife, Susie, opened a new veterinary clinic. Getting back into veterinary medicine and the day to day caring for animals brought Jeff to realize what a high number of certain kind of health problems he was seeing. He started looking for reasons, doing some research and attending educational classes, and came back to nutrition. Jeff has been recommending home-made diets for awhile now, and seeing great results in his patients. In fact, so many people were requesting the diets, the idea for this book was born. Now it is finally available to the general public, along with a new line of supplements that go with it. Dr. Jeff has started Rocky Mountain Pet Nutrition as a way to reach more people and pets than he could from his own clinic, and share with them the benefits of cooking for their pets.
